So, we now have an official spot on FenixDown.com to rant about anything we like.  So today i (tony) choose video games.  Warning: Grammar is not one of my talents. Im sure there will be run on sentences but hopefully you'll get my point. Now that's out of the way.  :) MMO  (Mass Multiplayer Online) Ok, so i started playing MMOs when Star wars Galaxies came out.   I was in love with that game.  I remember running through the desert near Bestine for literally an hour being amazed at the fact that i was well,.... running through the desert near Bestine for literally an hour.  The game was so much fun but eventually killed by Sony Online Entertainment.  Instead of spending the appropriate amount of time before release or even after on bugs and story content they spent their man power on changing the game to be more like WOW (World of Warcraft).  Such a great thing gone to waste.  There was only one mission that felt like star wars in the whole MMO, The Corvette.  I still loved the game but just got more and more frustrated with the game changing for the worse by the developers. Ehhh, i could whine about that game forever.             So I looked at WOW, wasn't really for me.  It felt like generic Dungeons & Dragons which turned me off, but with that said it's clearly a great MMO and the best out there.  Graphics are cartoonish but the game is stable, has great content and sandbox feel.  Blizzard has always released quality games.  Diablo, Starcraft, Warcraft and i believe they were Sierra before that which was Kings Quest and a number of others Always good!                After looking at WOW,  DDO (Dungeons & Dragons Online) came out.  Awesome!!  I love the game and still play it from time to time although i always stop playing around 10th level.  The game has fun quests and feels very much like Dungeons and Dragons.  The only thing i dont like about it is the feeling of being trapped, from a MMO perspective.  SWG (Star Wars Galaxies)  &  WOW were sandbox.  DDO was all about the instances, which is great too but you lose the whole MMO experience in over world travel.            Since DDO i played a host of other games, i played Everquest II, EVE, Stronghold Kingdoms, Conan, City of Heroes, .  Everytime i started another MMO, it felt very cookie cutter unoriginal.  At Comic Con, when LOTRO (Lord of the Rings Online)  came out i asked the guy flat out what the game had the other games didn't because i felt that every game was the same for the most part.  Long story short, i received no answer.   i played a few more MMOS too, Warhammer, Star Trek and Tali Rasa or something, i cant remember the name.  Fact is they are all the same.  Star Trek gets old very fast, potential is there though.                     So where does that leave us in 2011.  Anyone know where i'm going with this one??  Help me Obiwan Kenobi, you're my only hope!!  The Old Republic MMO.  From everything i read this game has the most promise for the following listed reasons. - Solved Crafting Problem, NPC (Non player character) companions craft for you.   - Stylized graphics.  not cartoonish, not real.  just my preference but i really like that. - Incredible amount of story content which because its star wars boosts the fun. - No "You can become a Jedi" tease like SWG did. - This game will not be plagued with errors like SWG was. - Audio is recorded for every character you talk to helping you get into the game more. - Single player and Multiplayer play is all accounted for. - huge, huge, huge sandbox feel. - battlefields to have PVP matches. Now, im obviously really excited about it, but do i feel this is the game that solves all of the MMO problems? .... No.  Here is what i'm worried about - flying in space - its in the game, cool, they have it pop in for specific scenarios,  thats cool, as long as you can fly around in sandbox space as well.   - attention to rank. rank in games is overlooked alot and shouldnt be. - rare prestige items and missions - there should be things in the game that only like 100 people out of 1 million have) not a game changer item, but they shouldnt be afraid to put it out there, thats the fun of the game. i dont know what they are doing for that, im just bringing that up - Mulitple players on one spaceship doing things just like the movies.  Anything!  take out the space trash , make it feel like a team effort.  people want to be challenged and though you want them feel like the Hero, sometimes its fun to work as a team and sit sidecar for a second. - They need to figure out how to apply more twitch combat in MMOs.  Thats just me being mad at technology though. :) Anyway so where are MMOs going?  Well Star Wars Old Republic is now one of the largest entertainment project of all time, which boggles the mind.  I hope this game becomes the shining example of how to do a MMO.  Games, in the last few years loved to say "Next Gen MMO"  but that was an obvious lie.  Star Wars if nothing else will be that i believe and hopefully this puts us back on the right path.   This has been a rant by Tony Hanson.
